PSHCE Overview
Curriculum

Term 1: Gangs and Knife Crime

Student will examine the rights and responsibilities that human beings have, comparing different societies across the globe. There will be a specific focus on the rise in gangs and knife crime. Students will discuss and explore peer pressure and assertiveness. They will also give consideration to conflict management and self management.

Students will participate in class discussions, debates, and complete a self-assessment following each unit to check their understanding.

Peer Pressure
Direct influence on people by peers, to follow by changing their attitudes, values, or behaviours to conform to those of the influencing group.

Conflict
A disagreement, argument or clash between people.

Resolution
Finding a end to the conflict that both sides can accept.

Anti-social behaviour
Behaviour likely to cause alarm, harassment, or distress to other people around you.

Knife Crime
Illegal activities involving knives.

County Lines
Gangs sending young people from cities into smaller towns and villages in order to sell drugs to the people living in these areas.

Fake news
Inaccurate, fake and fictional stories created by unscrupulous authors to trick the public into thinking they are true.

Dark Web
The name given to specific websites which are not accessible through normal search engines.

Term 5: Drugs, Alcohol and Tobacco Education (DATE) Students

Students will develop their understanding of alcohol, tobacco, energy drinks and vaping. They will explore the risks, law and give due consideration to the potential impact of peer pressure. Students will be given the opportunity to consider strategies to say 'no'.

Students will participate in class discussions, debates, and complete a self-assessment following each unit to check their understanding.

Pornography
Printed or visual material containing the explicit description or display of sexual organs or activity, intended to stimulate sexual excitement.

CSE
Child Sexual Exploitation

HIV

Condom
A condom is a sheath-shaped barrier device used during sexual intercourse to reduce the probability of pregnancy or a sexually transmitted infection (STIs).

Contraceptive
(of a method or device) serving to prevent pregnancy.

Coil
An IUD is a small T-shaped plastic and copper device that’s inserted into the womb (uterus) by a specially trained doctor or nurse.

Chlamydia
Chlamydia is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the UK. It's passed on from one person to another through unprotected sex (sex without a condom) and is particularly common in sexually active teenagers and young adults.

Gonorrhea
A venereal disease involving inflammatory discharge from the urethra or vagina.

FGM
Female Genital Mutilation

Consent
Permission for something to happen or agreement to do something.

Term 2: Careers and Options

Students will begin the process of choosing their year 9 options. There will be a focus on exploring career opportunities but also making students aware of how the process of taking GCSE's actually works. Preparing for the world of work will also happen with each student learning skills such as interview techniques, CV writing and the importance of references.

Students will participate in class discussions, debates, and complete a self-assessment following each unit to check their understanding.

GCSE
(in the UK except Scotland) a qualification in a specific subject typically taken by school students aged 14–16, at a level below A level. The equivalent in Scotland is Standard Grade

A Level
Level 3 courses studies during 16-19 education

BTEC
A level 2 or 3 vocational course that has some external examination and assessed coursework

Career
A career is an individual's journey through learning, work and other aspects of life. There are a number of ways to define a career and the term is used in a variety of ways.

Curriculum Vitae
Also called vita, vitae. a brief biographical résumé of one's career and training, as prepared by a person applying for a job.

Apprenticeship
A course in which you train to do a job and earn a wage

University
A high-level educational institution in which students study for degrees and academic research is done

Post 16
Sixth Form education or education after GCSE examinations

Work Experience
Short-term experience of employment, typically arranged for older pupils by schools.

Examination
A formal test of a person's knowledge or proficiency in a subject or skill.

Term 3: Global Responsibility

In this unit students will explore our roles and responsibilities with regard to looking after our planet and the world around us. We will investigate what role the UN and other international organisations play, as well as discussing topics such as animal rights, the plastic problem, global warming and aid to other countries.

Students will participate in class discussions, debates, and complete a self-assessment following each unit to check their understanding.

Current Affairs
Events of political or social interest and importance happening in the world at the present time.

Awareness
Knowledge or perception of a situation or fact.

Global Responsibility
It is the belief and practice of acting with the common good in mind, especially for the benefit of all societies. It involves being aware of the interconnectivity and interdependency of the world, and recognising the need for change.

Term 6: Relationships (RSE)

In this unit, students will further discuss healthy vs coercive and controlling relationships and sexual relationships. They will learn the difference between forced and arranged marriages. They will discuss coping strategies for break ups.

Students will learn about the law in relation to sexual activity. They will learn the signs of abuse within different relationships and will explore ways of managing such situations.

Students will participate in class discussions, debates, and complete a self-assessment following each unit to check their understanding.

Coercion
The act or practice of persuading someone to do something by using force or threats.

Controlling relationship
A relationship with someone who controls your actions, in a variety of ways, for their own benefit.

Arranged marriage
A marriage which family members or guardians may help 'arrange' by finding suitable partners and matching them together. This is consented to by the couple, although sometimes coercion or persuasion methods are used.

Forced Marriage
A marriage which family members or guardians enforce by making the couple feel as though they have no alternative or by actively threatening them.

Family honour
The idea that a family must maintain a particular standing in a community.

Amicable break-up
A break-up where the two individuals stay civil, don't attack each other and respect each other's boundaries.

Conflict
A disagreement, argument or clash between people.

Resolution
Finding a solution to the conflict that both sides can accept.

Conflict Management
Being able to stop the argument getting out of hand, to diffuse it and to take steps to find a resolution.

Term 4: Recognising and Managing Risk (RSE)

In this unit students will investigate areas such as safe sex and contraception, sexually transmitted infection including HIV and Aids, pornography and consent. There will also be some recapping of previous areas from year 7 and 8 of anything that would put a student at risk. Local charity, Loved, Valued and Able (LVA) will support with workshops on topics such as Porn and Sexting, and STIs and Contraception.

Students will participate in class discussions, debates, and complete a self-assessment following each unit to check their understanding.

Alcohol
A substance which can make a person drunk.

Tobacco
Nicotine rich leaves or an American plant, which are often used to smoke.

Addiction
Not having control over doing, taking or using something to the point where it could be harmful to you.

Vaping
The action or practice of inhaling and exhaling the vapour produced by an electronic cigarette or similar device.
